What is Bloatware

You are currently viewing What is Bloatware

When you buy an android mobile phone from a store, your mobile brand supplies the Android operating system (OS) with your phone.

Android OS comes with some basic applications pre installed from google. All brands customize the OS with the reason to provide a unique user experience. Your mobile will have brand unique features like UI, Launcher, Calculator, Calendar, Social networking tools, games, settings etc which separates user experience from other brands.

Many applications provided along with your phone are mostly useful. But some brands provide a number of extra applications pre-installed that are not useful to many people. Some of these applications are always running in the background, consuming your network data, storage and battery power. And the most important, they grab your attention frequently by notifying you of unnecessary things.

These applications are not a virus or spyware or any kind of threat to the user. But they are unnecessarily occupying phone resources and the user’s attention. These applications are called BLOATWARE. In a simple definition; a bloatware is an application which arrives with your mobile phone pre-installed by your mobile brand.

Some of these applications are removable, some can be disabled but some applications are not removable and users can’t disable them.

For example, if you are having a Samsung mobile, there are several apps preinstalled like CNN mobile, LinkedIn, Facebook, Moj, Pay Mini etc. You can uninstall most applications but some applications are not removable and you can’t even disable them as a normal user.

If you want to remove bloatware, you need to root your device but this will void your device warranty.
